More About The Bands…

Boiled In Lead

Rock’n’reel… Punk-folk… Country music from many countries…
BiL play fiddle, guitars, bass & drums with loads of power and emotion.

Boiled In Lead is:

  • Todd Menton vocals, guitar, mandolin, bodhrán, whistle
  • Drew Miller bass guitar, dulcimer
  • Morris Engel drum kit
  • Haley Olson fiddle

Boiled In Lead is the longest-running Celtic punk band in America, and an important part of the foundation of what became Minnesota punk rock. Bob Mould was among those who praised the band’s first self-released LP (“Even the fiddles rock,”) and the Hüskers invited the band to play an early show at Goofy’s Upper Deck. Today, the band’s star is still on the wall at First Avenue.

While in high school, bass player and founder Drew Miller became obsessed with traditional folk. He started the band in 1983 to turn the volume up and bring those tunes and songs to new audiences. Following their first LP, he met guitarist / vocalist Todd Menton at an Irish session. With distribution from Twin\Tone, the band was soon playing the First Avenue Mainroom, the Winnipeg Folk Festival; that led to a UK record deal and tours in Europe and around the country. The group and the individual musicians have won many Minnesota Music Awards, and toured throughout the US and in Europe.

Over the years, the band’s sound has changed with its membership. Violinist David Stenshoel, who passed away in 2021, pushed the band to expand beyond Ireland to tackle many world folk music traditions. Menton says: “…when we play… the very coolest thing is the tune itself. The original tradition is the power.”

Now, core members Todd Menton and Drew Miller add drummer Mo Engel and violinist Haley Olson to the lineup, moving forward with a wealthy of new material, as well as looking backward to reframe old tunes.

Undisclosed Sims

Since its Fall 2022 Inception, Undisclosed Sims has quickly become one of the most creative and prolific bands working in the Chicago scene of jazz and improvised music. Simulate, the group’s first recorded material, exposes the band’s deep and diverse collective language producing an album that draws influence from ambient music, kraut rock, free jazz, and art-rock. Throughout-Wills McKenna, Luke Polipnick, Andrew Scott Young, and Adam Shead-prove again and again that they are here to stay with their blistering yet deeply lyrical approach to improvisation and composition.

Wills McKenna – tenor saxophone, alto flute, effects pedals
Luke Polipnick – electric guitar

Forward! Marching Band

Forward! Marching Band is a roughly 30-piece activist street band from Madison, Wisconsin. We are a community-based, democratic, music-making collective that believes in using music to help fuel social change, have fun, and build community.

Founded in Madison, Wisconsin in 2011, Forward! Marching Band was forged in the crucible of the epic protests surrounding the new Governor’s regressive agenda. For weeks, we marched around the capitol in the snow and rain, gaining members and experience. Since that time, Forward! Marching Band has dedicated itself to maintaining that unique fighting spirit of the Wisconsin protest movement.

We believe in using music to help fuel social change, have fun, and build community. Forward! Marching Band is an ever-changing group of musicians. We play tunes from the catalogs of rock, klezmer, pop, labor, Balkan, New Orleans, and folk music. Our band consists of a diverse range of ages, musicianship, and abilities. We love costumes, silly hats, and spectacle! We share the duties of researching and arranging musical selections, directing and shaping rehearsals, costuming, and scheduling the band. Forward! Marching Band brings lively tunes to political protests, marches, rallies, parades, and community events.”
